How Mulch Reduces Irrigation in the UAE

Water scarcity is one of the most pressing environmental challenges facing the UAE. The country receives an average of just 94mm of rainfall per year — one of the lowest figures globally — and relies heavily on energy-intensive desalination for its freshwater supply. In this context, landscape irrigation represents a significant and often underappreciated source of water consumption.

Organic mulch is one of the most practical and cost-effective tools available to reduce landscape irrigation demand. This article explains the science behind how mulch conserves water, quantifies the savings achievable, and outlines how to apply mulch correctly to maximise water efficiency in UAE conditions.

How Soil Loses Water in Dubai

In an unprotected planting bed in Dubai, soil moisture is lost through two primary mechanisms:

  • Evaporation — direct moisture loss from the soil surface driven by heat, solar radiation, and low humidity
  • Transpiration — moisture drawn up through plant roots and released through leaves

Evaporation is the larger factor in UAE conditions. On a typical Dubai summer day, bare soil in direct sun can lose significant moisture within hours of irrigation. Without protection, the irrigation cycle must restart almost immediately — creating a cycle of high water use with diminishing returns for plant health.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) confirms that mulching can reduce soil evaporation by 50–70% in arid conditions, making it one of the highest-impact water conservation interventions available to landscape managers.

What Mulch Does to Retain Moisture

A correctly installed organic mulch layer works in three ways to conserve soil moisture:

1. Physical Barrier Against Evaporation

The mulch layer physically intercepts solar radiation and reduces direct wind contact with the soil surface. Both heat and wind are primary drivers of evaporation in the UAE. A 70mm organic mulch layer can reduce soil surface temperature by 10–15°C on a hot day — a meaningful change that directly reduces evaporation rate.

2. Water-Holding Capacity

Coconut coir mulch absorbs and holds moisture within its fibrous structure. When irrigated, water is held within the mulch layer and released slowly downward — extending the duration of soil moisture availability and reducing the volume of irrigation water that simply evaporates before reaching root depth.

3. Improved Soil Structure Over Time

As organic mulch breaks down, it contributes organic matter to the soil. This progressively improves the water-holding capacity of UAE's inherently sandy soils, reducing long-term irrigation requirements over multiple growing seasons.

Quantifying the Water Savings

Research from the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension — whose climate research is highly relevant to UAE conditions — found that organic mulch applied at 75–100mm depth reduced irrigation water requirements by up to 50% in arid landscapes.

For a 1,000m² commercial landscape in Dubai:

  • Without mulch: typical irrigation of 6–8 litres/m²/day in summer
  • With 70mm organic mulch: irrigation reduced to 3–4 litres/m²/day
  • Annual water saving across 1,000m²: approximately 1–2 million litres

At Dubai municipality water tariffs, this represents a tangible financial saving for commercial and hospitality properties — in addition to the environmental benefit.

Mulch and Dubai's Sustainability Agenda

The UAE's Net Zero 2050 strategic initiative and Dubai's Green Agenda both set targets for reduced water consumption across the built environment. Organic mulch directly contributes to these goals — making it relevant not only for cost management but for environmental compliance in publicly reported sustainability programmes.

For hotel groups, developers, and facilities management companies reporting against ESG frameworks, mulch installation across managed landscapes can be cited as a quantified water conservation measure.

How to Maximise Water Savings with Mulch

  • Install at a minimum of 70mm — each additional 10mm of depth improves evaporation reduction
  • Water the soil thoroughly before applying mulch to lock in initial moisture
  • Keep mulch layer away from plant stems to prevent localised moisture issues
  • Top up annually with 25–30mm to maintain effective depth as the mulch breaks down
  • Use a mulch calculator to ensure you apply sufficient quantity to achieve the specified depth across the full area
