Mulch Depth Guide for UAE Landscaping Projects
Install depth is the single most important variable in mulch performance. Too shallow — under 40mm — and the mulch provides minimal evaporation control, poor weed suppression, and degrades too quickly. Too deep — over 150mm — and you risk waterlogging in localised areas and potential issues with stem rot around sensitive plant species.
For UAE conditions specifically, depth recommendations are higher than in temperate climates. The intensity of solar radiation, ambient heat, and low humidity all accelerate the drying of exposed mulch — meaning a layer that would perform adequately at 50mm in the UK may deliver poor results at the same depth in Dubai.
The Three Standard Depths
50mm — Decorative Coverage
A 50mm layer is appropriate for sheltered ornamental beds, areas with regular maintenance access, and situations where visual finish is the primary goal rather than maximum moisture retention. In full sun Dubai conditions, a 50mm layer will provide some benefit but will require more frequent top-up than deeper applications.
70mm — Standard Commercial (Recommended)
70mm is the most widely specified depth for commercial landscaping projects in the UAE. It delivers effective moisture retention, meaningful weed suppression, and a good visual finish that is maintained over the full 18–24 month product lifespan. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends 75mm as the minimum depth for organic mulch to deliver effective moisture conservation — closely aligned with the 70mm commercial standard used across UAE projects.
100mm — Maximum Retention
100mm depth is recommended for tree surrounds, high-value specimen planting, exposed full-sun beds, and any application where root protection from heat is a priority. In Dubai's summer conditions, soil surface temperatures in unshaded areas can exceed 60–70°C — a level that is lethal to shallow feeder roots. A 100mm mulch layer provides meaningful insulation against this.
Research from Oregon State University Extension found that weed suppression effectiveness increases significantly between 50mm and 75mm depth — with diminishing returns above 100mm. In UAE conditions, the 70–100mm range delivers the optimal performance envelope.
Calculating How Much Mulch You Need
The volume formula is straightforward:
Area (m²) × Depth (m) = Volume (m³)
Examples for common UAE project sizes:
- Villa garden — 80m² at 70mm: 80 × 0.07 = 5.6m³
- Hotel courtyard — 500m² at 70mm: 500 × 0.07 = 35m³

Depth by Application Type
- Ornamental flower beds: 50–70mm — avoid direct contact with stems
- Shrub and ground cover beds: 70mm standard
- Tree surrounds: 100mm, extended to drip line, 100mm clearance from trunk
- Palm tree surrounds: 70–100mm, keep clear of trunk base
- Lawn borders and bed edges: 50mm for neat finish
- Slopes and inclines: 70mm, consider light compaction to prevent wash
Top-Up vs Full Replacement
After 12 months, a visual inspection will indicate whether the mulch layer has degraded to the point of requiring top-up. If the remaining depth is below 40mm, a top-up application of 25–30mm will restore performance without requiring full removal. Full replacement at 18–24 months brings the layer back to the specified depth and refreshes visual appearance.
