Case Study: Restoring a Jumeirah Villa Garden

Unlike a new-build garden, this one had mature shade trees, long-standing shrub beds and a hedge line, all showing the wear of years of replanting and summer stress. The Challenge
Restoration, not replacement, was the brief — the bones of the garden were good. Three challenges stood out:
- Crusted, hydrophobic surface. Years of bare sand had crusted so that irrigation ran off instead of soaking in, wasting water and leaving the root zone dry.
- Exposed tree roots and heat stress. Mature trees had surface roots exposed by erosion and years of raking, cooking in direct sun and stressing the canopy above.
- Exhausted soil biology. Decades of replanting without organic input had left the beds with almost no humus, negligible earthworm activity and little microbial life — the condition we describe in our note on organic matter in desert soils.
The owner wanted to keep the mature planting and simply give the garden back its health, rather than tearing it out and starting again.
The Solution
We specified a continuous layer of Green Zen organic coconut coir mulch across all planted beds and over the exposed tree-root zones at 70mm — the upper end of the residential 50–70mm range, chosen to insulate the mature roots and break the surface crust cycle. Coir suited a restoration for specific reasons:
- As a genuine coconut coir mulch it decomposes into humus over its 18–24 month life, rebuilding the organic matter the old beds had lost — something gravel or bare sand can never do.
- It is pH neutral (5.8–6.8), which works with the alkaline Jumeirah sand rather than against it.

Over the exposed tree roots we laid coir carefully, keeping it clear of the trunks themselves, so the roots are insulated without moisture being trapped against the bark.

Installation
Installation followed the method in our installation guide, with extra care around the mature planting:
- Surface breaking. The hydrophobic crust was broken up by hand and light raking so the first irrigation could penetrate, without disturbing the surface roots.
- Deep pre-watering. Beds and root zones watered slowly and thoroughly before mulching so the layer locked moisture into the newly opened surface.
- Spreading. Coir laid at a measured 70mm with a depth stick, extended out over the exposed tree-root zones to the canopy edge.
- Trunk and stem clearances. A 75–100mm gap kept around every trunk and stem so no moisture sat against bark — critical on mature trees where collar rot is a real risk.
- Settling irrigation. A light watering to knit the fibre into a stable mat.
