Compost Calculator: How Much Compost Does Your Garden Need?

Sandy UAE soil is close to inert: very low organic matter, almost no humus, minimal nitrogen, and a pH of 7.5–8.5 that locks up nutrients. Compost is how you fix that — it feeds soil biology, adds carbon, and gives microorganisms and earthworms something to work with. The question is always quantity, and guessing gets expensive when material is sold by the cubic metre.
This calculator turns your bed area and target depth into cubic metres, litres and 50L-bag equivalents using the same volume formula we use for mulch: Area (m²) × Depth (m) = Volume (m³). Enter your area, pick a depth between 30mm and 50mm for soil conditioning, and you have an order-ready number. If you have not measured yet, use the garden area calculator first.
One clarification before you start: Green Zen supplies 100% coconut coir organic mulch, not compost. Compost and mulch do different jobs — compost is dug in, mulch sits on top — and the best UAE beds use both. This tool sizes the compost layer; the mulch calculator sizes what goes over it.

Soil conditioning: 30–50mm. New beds: 50mm. Annual top-up: 30mm.
The formula, in full
Compost quantity is a simple volume calculation. The only trap is unit conversion — area is in square metres, depth is quoted in millimetres, and compost is sold in litres or cubic metres.
| Step | Calculation | Example (20 m² at 40mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Convert depth to metres | Depth mm ÷ 1000 | 40 ÷ 1000 = 0.04 m |
| 2. Volume in m³ | Area × depth (m) | 20 × 0.04 = 0.8 m³ |
| 3. Volume in litres | m³ × 1000 | 0.8 × 1000 = 800 L |
| 4. 50L bag equivalent | Litres ÷ 50, rounded up | 800 ÷ 50 = 16 bags |
Depth guidance for UAE conditions: 50mm when building a new bed in raw sand, 30–40mm for annual conditioning of established beds, and 10–20mm as a fine top-dressing for lawns. For pots and planters, work by proportion instead — 25–30% compost in the total mix.
How to measure your garden
Walk the bed with a tape measure and record length and width in metres, to one decimal place. Typical UAE villa borders are 0.8–1.5m deep strips along a boundary wall, so a 12m wall with a 1m border is simply 12 m². For circles around palms, measure the diameter of the cleared ring. For anything L-shaped or irregular, split it into two rectangles and add them — the garden area calculator handles all four common shapes for you.
Measure the planted area only. Exclude paving, artificial grass and decking, and if a mature shrub canopy covers soil you will still condition, include that ground — compost goes on the soil, not the leaves. Many Dubai villa gardens total 30–80 m² of actual bed space even when the plot is far larger.
Worked examples with real numbers
Example 1 — new 20 m² border in raw sand. New beds need the full 50mm conditioning rate: 20 × 0.05 = 1.0 m³ (1,000 litres, or 20 × 50L bags). Dig it into the top 200–300mm of sand before planting, then cap the finished bed with 50–70mm of coconut coir mulch to stop the summer sun burning off the organic matter you just added.
Example 2 — annual top-up of a 60 m² established garden. At the 30mm maintenance rate: 60 × 0.03 = 1.8 m³. Spread it in October as temperatures drop, water it in, and let soil biology pull it down. Under an existing mulch layer, rake the mulch aside, spread the compost, then rake the mulch back — the installation guide shows the sequence.
Example 3 — lawn top-dressing, 100 m² at 15mm. 100 × 0.015 = 1.5 m³, brushed into the sward. Light rates matter on lawns; bury the grass deeper than about 20mm and you will smother it.
Compost and mulch: two layers, two jobs
Compost is a soil amendment — it goes in the ground to build humus, hold nutrients and feed microorganisms. Mulch is a protective surface layer — it goes on the ground to cut evaporation by up to 70%, buffer soil temperature and suppress weeds. Skipping the mulch layer in the UAE means the sun oxidises your expensive compost from above while evaporation wicks moisture out of the root zone; skipping the compost means the soil under your mulch stays biologically poor.
The pairing also compounds over time: coconut coir breaks down slowly over its 18–24 month lifespan, adding organic matter of its own — unlike pine bark, which behaves very differently in Gulf heat. Budget both layers together with the mulch cost calculator, and if the mulch side of the job exceeds a cubic metre, bulk supply is markedly cheaper than bags.
When to apply compost in the UAE
Work compost in during the October–April season, ideally at the start of it. Soil biology is active, planting is under way, and new material has months to integrate before summer dormancy. Applying compost in July achieves little — biological activity slows in superheated soil and irrigation demand peaks, so nutrients leach rather than bind. If you must condition soil in summer, keep it under mulch and irrigation, preferably drip.
Sequence for a new bed: condition with compost, plant, install drip irrigation, then mulch. Species-level guidance is in the plant guides, and the science of why organic matter transforms sandy alkaline soil is covered on the learn hub. Frequently Asked Questions
How much compost do I need per square metre?
At the standard UAE conditioning rates: 30mm depth needs 30 litres per m², 40mm needs 40 litres, and 50mm needs 50 litres. The rule is simply depth in millimetres equals litres per square metre. A new bed in raw sand should get the full 50 L/m²; established beds usually need 30 L/m² annually.
Does Green Zen sell compost?
No — we supply 100% coconut coir organic mulch, in 10L and 20L buckets, 50L bags and bulk per cubic metre. This calculator is a free planning tool because compost and mulch are used together: compost conditions the soil below, mulch protects it from above. We are happy to advise on the full build-up on WhatsApp.
What is the difference between compost and mulch?
Compost is decomposed organic matter dug into the soil to add humus, nutrients and biology. Mulch is a surface layer — in our case coconut coir — laid on top to cut evaporation by up to 70%, moderate soil temperature and suppress weeds. Compost feeds the soil; mulch defends it. UAE gardens need both.
Can I use compost as a mulch on top of the soil?
You can, but it performs poorly in the UAE. Exposed compost oxidises quickly under 45°C sun, crusts over, and can grow weeds from wind-blown seed. It also offers far less evaporation control than a fibrous 50–70mm coir layer. Dig compost in, then cover it with proper mulch — each material where it works best.
How much compost for a new garden bed in sand?
Use 50mm across the bed — 50 litres per square metre — dug into the top 200–300mm. For a typical 20 m² villa border that is 1 m³. Raw UAE sand has almost no organic matter, so under-applying at this stage means weak establishment; it is the one application where generosity pays.
How often should I add compost in the UAE?
Once a year for most beds, applied at 30mm in October or November when temperatures drop and soil biology reactivates. Sandy soils burn through organic matter faster than clay soils, and high irrigation rates accelerate the loss, so an annual rhythm keeps humus levels climbing rather than merely holding.
How many 50L bags make one cubic metre?
Twenty. One cubic metre is 1,000 litres, so 1,000 ÷ 50 = 20 bags. It is a useful conversion for comparing bagged and bulk prices — for our mulch, 20 bags at AED 55 would cost AED 1,100 against AED 500 for a bulk cubic metre, which is why larger jobs go bulk.
Should compost go under or over mulch?
Under, always. The working order from bottom to top is: native soil, compost dug in, drip irrigation line, then 50–70mm of coir mulch. For annual top-ups on mulched beds, rake the mulch aside, spread compost, water, and rake the mulch back — its 18–24 month lifespan means you rarely need to replace it during the process.
Will compost fix alkaline UAE soil?
It moderates it rather than fixes it. Compost buffers pH locally around roots and, more importantly, adds the organic matter that makes nutrients available despite alkalinity. Pairing it with pH-neutral coir mulch (5.8–6.8) avoids adding further alkalinity from above — one reason we do not recommend limestone-based dressings.
How deep should I dig compost in?
Fork or rotovate it through the top 200–300mm of soil — the primary root zone for most shrubs, groundcover and seasonal planting. Deeper is wasted effort in sand; shallower leaves a rich layer that dries out fast. Around existing plants, work it in gently at the drip line to avoid tearing roots.
Does compost help soil hold water?
Substantially. Humus can hold several times its weight in water, and every percentage point of organic matter you add measurably raises the water-holding capacity of sand. Combine that with a mulch layer cutting surface evaporation by up to 70% and the same irrigation schedule keeps beds moist far longer — see the water savings calculator.
Is compost safe with saline irrigation water?
It helps rather than hurts. Organic matter improves soil structure and drainage, which lets periodic deep watering flush salts below the root zone instead of letting them accumulate at the surface. If your bore or TSE water is noticeably saline, annual compost plus mulch is one of the most effective mitigations available.
How much compost do pots and planters need?
Work by proportion, not depth: 25–30% compost in the total mix, blended with sweet soil and drainage material. A 100L planter therefore takes 25–30 litres. Refresh the top third of the mix each October. Finish planters with 30–50mm of coir mulch — evaporation from pots is even faster than from beds.
Can I make my own compost in the UAE?
Yes, with shade and moisture management. A covered bin kept damp will process kitchen and garden waste year-round, though summer heat means it dries out fast without attention. Most villa gardens still buy the bulk of their compost because home systems rarely produce cubic-metre quantities; use this calculator to see the gap.
Does coconut coir mulch eventually become compost?
Effectively, yes. Coir is a high-carbon organic material that breaks down slowly over 18–24 months in UAE conditions, feeding earthworms and microorganisms and finishing as organic matter in your topsoil. That is a genuine advantage over inorganic mulches like stone or rubber, which contribute nothing as they age.
What should I order first, compost or mulch?
Order them for the same week if you can: condition the soil, plant, then mulch immediately so evaporation never gets a head start. Mulch delivery lead times run 1–2 working days for Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman and up to 2–4 days for the northern emirates — check the delivery calculator and confirm on WhatsApp +971 58 654 8551.
