Almost every mulch statistic on the internet was measured somewhere else — a temperate university trial, a nursery in a climate with rain, a manufacturer's brochure with no method attached. The UAE is not that place. Our summers exceed 45°C, evaporation rates are among the highest on earth, soils are alkaline sand at pH 7.5–8.5, and much irrigation water carries salt. Numbers imported from Oregon or Kerala are a starting hypothesis here, not an answer.
The Green Zen Mulch Lab is our response: a field-testing programme that measures what coconut coir mulch actually does in UAE conditions, on UAE sand, under UAE sun, and publishes the methods before the results. No stock claims, no borrowed graphs. Where we cite general science — evapotranspiration physics, FAO soil moisture guidance — we say so; where a number is ours, it will have come from an instrument we placed in the ground.

What we measure, and why these four
The four programmes map to the four claims every mulch supplier makes: cooler soil, retained moisture, less irrigation, and useful decomposition. Each is measurable with modest, honest field equipment — soil moisture probes, min/max thermometers, water meters, depth gauges — in paired test beds: identical soil, identical planting, identical drip irrigation, one mulched at 70mm with Green Zen coconut coir, one left bare. The paired-bed design matters because it isolates the mulch effect from weather, season and irrigation changes — the confound that ruins most casual before/after comparisons.
The general science is not in doubt. Mulch demonstrably reduces evaporation — by up to 70% versus bare soil in published horticultural research — moderates soil temperature and adds organic matter as it breaks down. What is genuinely unknown is the size of each effect here: on sandy alkaline soil, under 45°C+ heat, with saline irrigation and DEWA water prices giving every saved litre a dirham value. That local number is what the Lab exists to produce.
Why original research matters for a mulch company
Because we ask customers to make decisions with money: a villa owner sizing an order on the calculator, a hotel writing mulch into a maintenance budget, a developer standardising a specification across a community via commercial supply. Those decisions deserve better than recycled brochure claims. Publishing methodology first also disciplines us — a stated method can be checked, and a stated hypothesis can fail in public.

Why not just cite existing mulch research?
We do cite established science — evapotranspiration physics, FAO soil moisture conservation guidance, published findings that mulch can cut evaporation by up to 70%. How are the test beds set up?
In matched pairs: identical sandy soil, identical planting, identical drip irrigation on the same controller. One bed carries 70mm of Green Zen coconut coir mulch; the other is left bare as a control. Because both beds share weather and watering, any difference in the readings is attributable to the mulch layer.
What equipment does the Lab use?
Deliberately simple, verifiable field instruments: soil moisture probes at fixed depths, min/max thermometers in the root zone, water meters on irrigation lines, and depth gauges with weighed samples for decomposition tracking. Modest equipment used consistently beats impressive equipment used once.
What will the Lab publish?
For each programme: the hypothesis, the full method, the measurement cadence, and then the data as charts and tables with the raw context — season, irrigation regime, bed configuration. Where a result is uncertain or a run is compromised, we will say so rather than quietly dropping it.
Does the Lab test other mulches besides coir?
The core programme measures Green Zen coconut coir against bare soil, because that is the decision our customers actually face.
