Mulch vs Landscape Fabric: An Honest Comparison for UAE Gardens

Walk through almost any newly landscaped compound in the UAE and you will find the same detail repeated bed after bed: a sheet of black woven fabric pinned over the sand, with mulch or gravel spread on top. Landscape fabric — also sold as weed membrane, geotextile or weed barrier — has become a default specification. The question almost nobody asks is whether it belongs in a planted bed at all.
Our answer, as a mulch supplier, needs to be honest rather than convenient: fabric and organic mulch are not partners. They work against each other. The entire long-term value of an organic mulch is that it decomposes into the soil below, feeding organic matter, humus and soil biology into sand that desperately lacks all three. A fabric sheet between mulch and soil intercepts that process completely — you keep the appearance of an organic system and lose its substance.
That does not make fabric useless. Under pathways, gravel margins and zero-plant zones it does a legitimate job. What landscape fabric promises — and what it delivers
The pitch for fabric is permanent weed control: a physical barrier that blocks weeds for ever while letting water and air through. The reality, documented by horticultural extension research and visible in any five-year-old installation, is different.
New fabric does suppress germination from the soil below for a while. But dust, silt and decomposing mulch accumulate on top of the fabric within a season or two, creating a growing medium above the barrier. Windblown seeds — and in the UAE that includes Bermuda grass and everything a shamal carries — germinate in that layer and root through the fabric's pores. Now the weeds are anchored in the fabric itself, and pulling them tears it. Nutgrass, the region's worst weed, is capable of piercing fabric from below with its sharp growing points.
Meanwhile the pores that were supposed to keep the fabric permeable clog with the same fines. Water begins sheeting sideways off the fabric instead of soaking through, so irrigation and rain feed the edges of the bed rather than the roots in the middle. The barrier ends up doing the opposite of both its promises: weeds grow on it, and water struggles through it.
The core problem: fabric blocks organic matter cycling
Even if fabric kept its promises, planted beds would still be the wrong place for it, because of what it interrupts.
UAE soils are typically sand with 1% or less organic matter, alkaline at pH 7.5–8.5, low in nitrogen and nearly biologically inert. The single most valuable thing you can do for such a soil is feed it a continuous supply of decomposing organic material. That is precisely what an organic mulch does: as coir breaks down over its 18–24 month life, its carbon and nutrients move downward, earthworms and microorganisms carry fragments into the profile, and the top layer of dead sand gradually becomes living soil with real structure and water-holding capacity.
Put a fabric sheet in the middle of that system and the cycle stops dead. The mulch decomposes on top of the barrier and the resulting humus stays there — feeding the surface weed layer instead of your plants. Below the fabric, the soil receives nothing: no carbon, no nitrogen cycling, no worm activity, no improvement, year after year. Soil biology needs the mulch–soil interface to be a boundary, not a wall.
There is a thermal cost too. Black fabric under a thinning mulch layer absorbs heat, and fabric impedes the gas exchange that keeps root zones healthy. Coir directly on soil: how the alternative works
The comparison is not fabric versus nothing. A properly installed 50–70mm layer of coconut coir, laid directly on prepared, pre-wetted soil, does everything fabric claims to do — without the wall.
Weed control: a full-depth coir layer blocks the light that weed seeds need to germinate, and the few windblown seedlings that start in the loose surface fibre pull out with two fingers because there is nothing for them to bind to. Established perennial weeds must be removed before installation either way — fabric does not stop nutgrass, and neither does any mulch, so honest weed control starts with clearance, as covered in our list of installation mistakes.
Water: coir is exceptionally breathable and absorbent. It takes in irrigation and rain, passes them through to the soil, then shuts down evaporation from below — cutting root-zone moisture loss by up to 70% versus bare soil. Air and water move freely across the mulch–soil interface in both directions, which is exactly the exchange fabric restricts.

Where landscape fabric genuinely makes sense
An honest comparison has to give fabric its wins, and it has real ones — all in places where nothing is meant to grow and no soil is meant to improve.
Pathways and gravel areas
Under a gravel path, decorative pebble margin or stepping-stone run, fabric earns its keep by doing a different job: separation. It stops gravel migrating down into the sand and sand pumping up into the gravel, keeping the surface clean and firm and reducing how often you top up stone. Weed pressure in a trafficked path is low anyway, and there is no soil food web you are trying to build. Specify a heavy woven geotextile here, not the flimsy spun material sold for beds.
Other fair uses
Fabric is also reasonable under hardscape edges and utility margins, behind retaining walls as a soil separator, under artificial turf build-ups, and in zero-plant zones around plant rooms or tank farms where the goal is simply a tidy, low-maintenance mineral surface. The rule that falls out of all this is simple: fabric belongs where plants are absent by design; mulch belongs where plants are present. The mistake is combining them.
Already have fabric under your beds?
Many UAE villa owners inherit fabric-under-mulch beds from the original landscaping contractor. Whether to act depends on the bed's condition.
If plants are thriving and the fabric is deep beneath an established root system, do not tear the garden apart — the disruption may cost more than the fabric does. Improve the system from above: keep organic mulch topped up, and accept slower soil improvement.
If beds are underperforming — weeds rooted into the surface, water sheeting to the edges, plants stalling — remove the fabric at the next replanting opportunity, in the October–April season. Strip the old mulch aside, pull the fabric (it usually comes out in root-bound fragments, which tells you everything about its condition), add a thin compost layer to jump-start soil biology, replant, and re-mulch with 50–70mm of coir directly on the soil. The verdict
In planted beds, skip the fabric. Lay breathable coconut coir directly on prepared soil at 50–70mm and let decomposition do what it is supposed to do: turn the UAE's inert sand into living soil while suppressing weeds and slashing evaporation. In unplanted zones — paths, gravel margins, utility strips — use a proper woven geotextile and no organic mulch at all.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I put landscape fabric under mulch?
Not in planted beds. Fabric blocks the decomposing mulch from reaching the soil, which cancels the main long-term benefit of organic mulch — building organic matter, humus and soil biology in sandy UAE ground. Within a few seasons weeds also root into the sediment that collects on the fabric, and its pores clog so water sheets off rather than soaking through.
Does landscape fabric stop weeds permanently?
No. It suppresses germination from below for a season or two, but dust and decomposed mulch soon build a rooting layer on top of it, where windblown seeds — including Bermuda grass — germinate and root through the pores. Nutgrass can pierce fabric from beneath. By year three, weeding a fabric bed is typically harder than weeding a mulched one.

Is coconut coir mulch breathable enough to replace fabric?

Where does landscape fabric actually make sense?
Anywhere nothing is meant to grow: under gravel paths and pebble margins, beneath stepping-stone runs, under artificial turf build-ups, behind retaining walls as a separator, and in zero-plant utility zones. Its real job there is separation — keeping gravel and sand from mixing — not weed control. Use a heavy woven geotextile for these applications.
Does fabric let water through to plant roots?
New fabric does. Old fabric often does not — fine dust, silt and mulch particles progressively clog the pores, and water begins sheeting sideways to the bed edges instead of infiltrating. Will mulch alone control weeds in the UAE?

Does landscape fabric make soil hotter?

How do I plant into a bed that has fabric under the mulch?
You must cut an X through the fabric for every plant, which progressively destroys the barrier and leaves edges that weeds exploit. In a fabric-free coir bed you simply pull the mulch aside, plant, and pull it back. Gardens that are replanted seasonally — as most UAE ornamental beds are — suffer fabric degradation fastest.
Should I remove existing fabric from under my mulch?
If the bed is thriving, leave it and top up mulch normally. Does coir mulch decompose too fast without fabric underneath?
Coir's decomposition is the benefit, not a leak to be plugged. It breaks down over 18–24 months, losing roughly 20–30% of volume a year into the soil as organic matter, and an annual autumn top-up maintains depth. Fabric does not slow decomposition anyway — it just traps the products on the wrong side of a membrane where your plants cannot use them.

Fabric adds material and installation labour up front, then a deferred cost most people ignore: removal, once it is clogged and root-bound, which is slow, unpleasant work. Do earthworms survive under landscape fabric?
Populations decline because their food supply is cut off. Earthworms and soil microorganisms feed on organic material arriving from the surface; fabric intercepts that supply, so the soil beneath stays biologically poor. What should go under mulch if not fabric?

Can I use cardboard instead of fabric under mulch?
Cardboard is a different tool: a biodegradable light-block used in sheet mulching to smother existing annual weeds.
