What actually makes a mulch "organic" in the UAE

The word organic is used loosely across the Gulf landscaping trade, so it pays to be precise. In horticultural terms, an organic mulch is any layer made from once-living plant matter that breaks down over time and feeds the soil, as opposed to inert materials such as gravel, crushed stone, glass or rubber. By that definition pine bark, wood chip, straw and shredded leaves all qualify. So does coconut coir. What separates them is not whether they are organic, but how they behave once you spread them across sandy, alkaline UAE soil and expose them to 45C+ heat, saline irrigation water and relentless evaporation.

2. Root-zone temperature

Organic mulch is a poor conductor of heat. Sitting on top of the bed, it insulates the soil beneath from the worst of the midday load and buffers the swing between scorching afternoons and cooler nights. Coverage is pure arithmetic once you fix a depth. The rule is Area (m²) × Depth (m) = Volume (m³). A 30m² bed at 50mm (0.05m) needs 30 × 0.05 = 1.5m³. Multiply the m³ figure by 1000 to get litres, then divide by pack size.

Why coir beats pine bark and wood chip in the Gulf

Use the formula Area in square metres multiplied by Depth in metres equals Volume in cubic metres. For example, a 30m2 bed at 50mm depth is 30 multiplied by 0.05, which equals 1.5m3. Is coconut mulch pH neutral?

Does mulch attract pests or termites?

Coir is much less attractive to wood-boring pests than fresh wood chip or bark, because it is a fibrous husk rather than timber. Can I use organic mulch with drip irrigation?

Yes, and the two work very well together. You can lay mulch over existing drip lines or run the drip on top of the soil beneath the mulch. Because the mulch slows evaporation, water from the emitters spreads and holds in the root zone instead of drying off the surface. How is coir mulch different from coco peat?

Coco peat is the fine, spongy pith used as a growing medium mixed into soil and pots. Coir mulch is the coarser, screened fibre used as a surface layer on top of beds. Both come from the coconut husk, but they do different jobs. For covering beds, suppressing weeds and cutting evaporation you want the mulch grade, not peat, which would compact and crust if used as a surface cover.

Will mulch wash or blow away?

Coir is heavier and more stable than lightweight bark or wood chip, so it resists floating under drip and hose and moving in wind far better. Is organic mulch better than gravel or stone?

For plant health, yes. Gravel and stone are inert: they suppress weeds and look tidy but add nothing to the soil and can radiate heat into the root zone. How often do I need to top up mulch?

Because coir lasts 18 to 24 months, most gardens only need a light top-up once a year, usually at the start of the cool season, to restore the layer to 50 to 70mm as the lower material breaks down into the soil. Beds in full sun with heavy irrigation may need topping up a little sooner. Topping up is quick and uses far less material than the first application.

Can I mulch potted plants and containers?

Yes. A thin 20 to 30mm layer of coir on the surface of pots and containers reduces evaporation and keeps the compost cooler, which matters a great deal for pots exposed to UAE sun.
