When is the best time to plant in the UAE?

October to April. Soil and air temperatures drop enough for roots to establish before the extreme heat returns. October–November is ideal for trees, palms and shrubs, giving them a full mild season to root in. Avoid planting anything in June–September except container-grown plants moved with minimal root disturbance — and even then, expect to shade and water them intensively.

How often should I water my garden in the UAE summer?

Most established shrubs and trees need deep watering every 1–3 days in June–September, ideally by drip irrigation before sunrise. Bedding plants may need daily water. The exact volume depends on the species — each of our plant guides gives a seasonal range. A 50–70mm coconut coir mulch layer reduces evaporation losses by up to 70%, which usually lets you extend intervals or cut run times noticeably.

Why do plant leaves turn yellow in UAE gardens?

The two most common causes are chlorosis and overwatering. UAE soils are alkaline (pH 7.5–8.5), which locks up iron and manganese — leaves yellow while veins stay green. Chelated iron and added organic matter help. Overwatering in sandy soil suffocates roots and causes uniform yellowing and drop. Check soil moisture at root depth before assuming the plant is thirsty.

What mulch depth should I use for plants in the UAE?

50–70mm of coconut coir mulch for most residential beds, trees and palms, tapering to around 40–50mm for small bedding plants and ground cover. Always keep mulch pulled back from trunks and stems — 50–100mm for shrubs, more for trees — so the collar stays dry and rot-free. Is coconut coir mulch safe for all plants?

Yes. Coir is pH neutral (5.8–6.8), free of dyes and chemicals, and breaks down over 18–24 months into organic matter that feeds soil biology. That slight acidity is actually helpful against the UAE's alkaline sand. The only adjustments are depth and clearance: succulents like desert rose and adenium need mulch kept well away from the stem base, and bedding plants take a thinner layer.

Can I grow fruit trees in the UAE?

Absolutely. Date palms are native, and lemons, limes, mangoes, figs and pomegranates all fruit well in home gardens with drip irrigation and a mulched root zone. The keys are planting in October–November, feeding to counter alkaline-soil nutrient lockout, and protecting shallow feeder roots from summer heat. Which plants survive UAE summer with the least water?

Ghaf, neem, desert rose, portulaca, lantana, tecoma and established bougainvillea top the list. The ghaf tree is the benchmark — it is the UAE's national tree precisely because it survives on deep groundwater with minimal irrigation. Pairing drought-tolerant species with drip irrigation and coir mulch is the basis of xeriscaping, and it cuts DEWA water bills significantly.

Should I use drip irrigation or a hose?

Drip, in almost every case. It delivers water slowly at the root zone with minimal evaporation, works on a timer for pre-dawn watering, and keeps foliage dry, which reduces fungal problems. Hose watering in this climate loses a large share to evaporation and runoff on sandy soil. Run drip lines under the mulch layer, not on top of it, for best efficiency.

Why did my plants die after I planted them in summer?

Summer planting is the most common cause of plant loss in the UAE. Root balls in 45°C heat cannot establish fast enough to replace the water the canopy loses, so plants desiccate even with daily watering. Transplant shock, hot irrigation water sitting in pipes, and reflected heat from walls make it worse. Wait for October, prepare the bed with compost and mulch, and survival rates jump.
