Bermuda Grass (Lawn): UAE Care Guide

UAE lawn with mulched planting beds and tree rings edged in organic coconut mulch

Bermuda grass is the standard lawn and turf grass of the UAE, and for good reason. A warm-season grass, it thrives in the fierce summer heat that flattens cool-season lawns, spreads vigorously to knit into a dense hard-wearing sward, and tolerates the sandy, saline conditions of a Gulf garden better than almost any alternative. From villa lawns to parks, verges and sports pitches, most of the green turf across the Emirates is Bermuda or a Bermuda blend.

One point is important before you read on: coconut coir mulch is for garden beds, not for the lawn itself. You never spread mulch over turf — it would smother the grass. What mulch does around a Bermuda lawn is transform the planting beds, borders, tree rings and verges next to it, defining crisp edges, cutting weeds that creep into turf, and saving water on the surrounding plantings. This guide covers proper Bermuda lawn care — mowing, watering, feeding, overseeding and summer resilience — and how to use coir mulch correctly on the beds around it.

Overview

Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon and improved hybrids) is a fine- to medium-textured warm-season grass that spreads by both above-ground stolons and below-ground rhizomes, giving it exceptional recovery and density. Improved seeded and hybrid vegetative types are used for finer lawns and sports turf, while common Bermuda covers verges and hardy general areas. It roots deeply, tolerates heat, drought, salt and hard wear, and greens up fast whenever it is watered and warm.

Its one visible weakness is cool weather: as a warm-season grass, Bermuda slows and can turn straw-brown and semi-dormant through the cooler winter months of December to February. This is why so many UAE lawns are overseeded with ryegrass for winter colour. Coconut coir mulch has no role on the grass itself, but it is central to finishing the landscape around it — the beds, borders and tree rings — as covered across our organic mulch and coconut mulch guides.

Water Requirements

Bermuda is drought-tolerant for a lawn grass but needs regular irrigation to stay green and dense in the UAE climate, especially through the summer.

  • Establishment (new turf or seed): keep the surface consistently moist with light daily watering until rooted, then taper.
  • Established, summer (Jun–Sep): roughly 25–40 litres per m² per week, split over three or four deep waterings — deep and infrequent beats shallow and daily, driving roots down.
  • Established, winter (Dec–Feb): far less, perhaps 10–15 litres per m² per week, as growth slows and evaporation drops.

Water early morning to cut evaporation and reduce disease, and adjust to your soil and system. While you never mulch the turf, mulching the surrounding beds cuts their evaporation by up to 70%, so the garden uses far less water on a DEWA meter — the beds stop competing with the lawn for irrigation. Work out bed volumes on the mulch calculator and see the installation guide for edging beds cleanly against turf.

Best Mulch & Depth

This is the key point for a lawn: do not mulch the turf itself. Spreading coconut coir over living Bermuda grass would smother and kill it. Mulch belongs on the beds and features around the lawn, not on the sward. Used correctly, though, coir mulch is exactly what makes a lawn look finished and cuts its maintenance.

Apply 50–70mm of coconut coir mulch to the planting beds, borders, shrub areas, tree rings and verge strips that adjoin the lawn. Around trees, keep the coir clear of the trunk in a ring rather than piled against the bark. Along bed edges, a clean mulched border gives a crisp line against the green turf, cuts the weeds that creep from beds into the grass, and holds moisture in the planted areas so they draw less water. The pH-neutral coir (5.8–6.8) lasts 18–24 months, so one application maintains those edges for two seasons. Install it edge-to-edge as shown in our installation guide, and size each bed and tree ring with the calculator.

Soil & Fertiliser

Bermuda copes with the poor, sandy, alkaline soils of the UAE (pH 7.5–8.5) better than most grasses and tolerates the salinity of Gulf irrigation water, which is part of why it dominates. It performs best in free-draining soil that has been levelled and, ideally, improved with organic matter before laying, but it will establish and spread even on lean sand given water and feed.

Feed a Bermuda lawn regularly through its active growing season. A nitrogen-rich lawn fertiliser applied roughly every four to six weeks from spring through autumn keeps colour and density up; ease right off in the cool winter months. Iron supplements green the turf without forcing excess growth. The beds around the lawn are where organic matter and coir mulch do their work — the slow breakdown of pH-neutral coir conditions bed soil and buffers alkalinity for the shrubs and flowers, while the lawn itself is fed directly.

Sun & Position

Full sun is essential. Bermuda is a sun-loving grass that thins out badly in shade, so it thrives on open lawns, verges and sports areas across the Emirates but struggles under dense tree canopies or on the shaded north side of buildings. In heavily shaded spots a groundcover or shade-tolerant planting mulched with coir is often a better answer than fighting to keep thin grass alive from Dubai to Al Ain.

Its heat and salt tolerance let it hold ground where cool-season grasses fail, and its vigorous spreading habit means it recovers quickly from wear, making it the natural choice for lawns that get real use. That same vigour is a double edge: Bermuda spreads by stolons and rhizomes into beds and borders, which is precisely where a clean, deep coir-mulched edge earns its keep, forming a barrier that keeps the grass in the lawn and out of the plantings around Abu Dhabi gardens.

Common Problems

Winter browning is the most common complaint and is largely natural — as a warm-season grass, Bermuda goes semi-dormant and straw-coloured in the cool months. Overseeding with ryegrass keeps it green (see below). Thatch builds up from the dense stolons and needs periodic scarifying to keep the sward healthy. Weed invasion, especially broadleaf weeds and other grasses, is worst where beds meet turf — a clean coir-mulched edge is the simplest defence.

Bermuda faces some fungal diseases such as brown patch and dollar spot in humid spells or where the lawn is overwatered at night; water in the morning and improve airflow. Grubs and other soil pests occasionally damage roots. Its aggressive spreading into beds is itself a maintenance issue, best managed with deep edging and mulch. Seasonal Care Calendar

SeasonCare
Oct–NovOverseed with ryegrass for winter colour as nights cool; mow a little higher, feed lightly and refresh the coir mulch on surrounding beds and tree rings.
Dec–FebCool season. Bermuda slows or goes semi-dormant; ryegrass carries the colour. Water and feed sparingly, mow the overseed as needed.
Mar–MayBermuda greens up as it warms. Scarify to remove thatch, resume regular feeding, step up watering; top up bed mulch before summer.
Jun–SepPeak growth and resilience. Mow regularly, water deeply three or four times a week early morning, feed every four to six weeks — the lawn is at its best.

A Bermuda lawn is the frame for the planted parts of a garden, and coir mulch ties the two together. Edge it with beds of heat-tolerant colour such as lantana and portulaca for the summer, and cool-season bedding like dianthus for the winter months. Shaded strips where the grass thins are better given a coir-mulched planting of coleus than left as struggling turf, keeping the whole garden green where the lawn cannot reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put coconut mulch on my Bermuda lawn?

No — never spread mulch over living turf. A layer of coconut coir on top of Bermuda grass would smother and kill it. Mulch is for garden beds, not lawns. What you do instead is apply coir mulch to the planting beds, borders, shrub areas, tree rings and verge strips around the lawn. Used there, it defines crisp edges against the green grass, cuts the weeds that creep from beds into turf, and saves water on the surrounding plantings, finishing the landscape without ever touching the grass.

Why does my Bermuda lawn go brown in winter?

That is natural dormancy. Bermuda is a warm-season grass, so it slows down and can turn straw-brown and semi-dormant through the cooler winter months of December to February, especially on cold nights. It is not dead — it greens back up as temperatures rise in spring. Most UAE gardeners who want a green winter lawn overseed with ryegrass in autumn, which grows in the cool season and keeps the surface green while the Bermuda rests underneath.

How short should I mow Bermuda grass?

Bermuda is naturally a low-growing, low-mown grass and looks best kept fairly short — commonly around 20–40mm for a home lawn, lower for fine hybrid or sports turf with the right mower. Mow regularly through the summer growing season so you never remove more than about a third of the leaf at once, which keeps the sward dense and avoids scalping. Raise the height a little in winter and over any ryegrass overseed. Keep the mower blades sharp for a clean cut.

Should I overseed my Bermuda lawn in the UAE?

If you want a green lawn through winter, yes. Because Bermuda goes semi-dormant and browns in the cool months, overseeding with perennial or annual ryegrass in autumn is the standard UAE practice for keeping colour from roughly November to March. Mow the Bermuda low, scatter the ryegrass seed as nights cool, keep it moist to germinate, then manage it as a temporary cool-season lawn. As the heat returns in spring the ryegrass fades and the Bermuda takes back over.

How much water does a Bermuda lawn need in summer?

Roughly 25–40 litres per square metre per week in peak summer, split over three or four deep waterings rather than daily sprinkles, so the roots grow down and the lawn stays drought-resilient. Water early in the morning to cut evaporation and reduce fungal disease. It needs far less in winter as growth slows. Mulching the beds around the lawn helps the overall water budget, since well-mulched plantings draw far less irrigation and no longer compete with the turf.

How do I stop Bermuda grass invading my flower beds?

Bermuda spreads aggressively by stolons and rhizomes, so it will creep into beds if nothing stops it. The most effective defence is a clean, deep edge combined with a thick coir mulch layer in the beds: cut a defined edge between lawn and bed, then lay 50–70mm of coconut coir mulch across the bed. The physical edge and the mulch together make it much harder for runners to root in, and any that do cross are easy to spot and pull from the loose mulch surface.

Is Bermuda grass good for the UAE climate?

It is the standard UAE lawn grass precisely because it suits the climate. As a warm-season grass it thrives in the intense summer heat that flattens cool-season lawns, tolerates the sandy alkaline soil and saline irrigation water common across the Emirates, spreads to form a dense hard-wearing sward, and recovers quickly from wear. Its main limitations are winter dormancy, when it browns and is often overseeded, and poor shade tolerance, which makes it thin under trees and on shaded sides of buildings.

Do I need to mulch around trees in a lawn?

Yes, and it is one of the best uses of coir mulch around turf. A mulched ring around each tree keeps mowers and strimmers away from the trunk, holds moisture at the roots, suppresses grass and weeds competing with the tree, and looks tidy. Apply 50–70mm of coconut coir in a ring but keep it clear of the trunk itself rather than piled against the bark, which can cause rot. One application lasts 18–24 months before it needs topping up.

Why is my Bermuda lawn thin and patchy in the shade?

Bermuda is a sun-loving grass and thins out badly in shade — it simply cannot maintain density under a dense tree canopy or on the shaded north side of a building. Rather than fight to keep struggling grass alive there, many UAE gardeners convert deep-shade areas into coir-mulched planting beds with shade-tolerant plants such as coleus, which gives colour and cover where turf fails. In lighter shade, raising the mowing height and easing wear can help the grass hold on.

When should I scarify and dethatch Bermuda grass?

Spring is the best time, as the grass greens up and begins active growth, so it can recover quickly from the disturbance. Bermuda's dense stolons build up thatch over time, and periodic scarifying removes that layer to keep water, air and feed reaching the soil and to maintain a healthy sward. Follow scarifying with feeding and watering to help the lawn knit back in. Avoid heavy dethatching in winter dormancy or the peak of summer stress.

How long does coir mulch last on the beds around a lawn?

Green Zen coconut coir mulch lasts 18–24 months on the beds, borders and tree rings around a lawn, so one application maintains your clean edges and weed suppression for around two seasons before it needs topping up. It is pH-neutral at 5.8–6.8 and breaks down slowly, gently conditioning the bed soil as it goes. Because it stays put and does not blow around like bark, it holds a crisp line against the turf, which is exactly what you want where beds meet grass.
