Conocarpus in the UAE: Risks, Restrictions and Care

Conocarpus became the default tree of the UAE building boom: fast, dense, evergreen, cheap and almost impossible to kill. It lined new roads, screened raw plots and hedged countless villas within a couple of seasons. If speed were the only measure, nothing beats it.
But you should know the full picture before planting one. Conocarpus is now restricted or actively discouraged in parts of the UAE because of three real problems: aggressively invasive roots that crack pipes, paving and foundations; high water consumption at a time when the country is working hard to conserve; and heavy pollen that is a recognised trigger for allergies and respiratory complaints. Several municipalities have removed it from approved planting lists.

Overview
Botanical name: Conocarpus erectus (buttonwood) and Conocarpus lancifolius (the common UAE screening form, sometimes called damas). Family: Combretaceae. Native to coastal East Africa, Arabia and the tropical Americas, it tolerates heat, drought, salinity and hard pruning — the toughness that made it the workhorse of UAE landscaping.
That same toughness is the problem. Its roots range far beyond the canopy and aggressively follow any moisture — irrigation lines, leaking joints, sewer connections, the damp soil beside pool shells and building footings. Lifted paving, cracked villa boundary walls and blocked drains are common enough that municipalities in Dubai and other emirates have restricted or discouraged its use near structures and services. On top of that it drinks heavily for a supposedly drought-tolerant tree, and its abundant pollen is a well-known local allergy trigger. Our honest advice: for new planting, choose a native. Water Requirements
Despite its drought-tolerant reputation, conocarpus uses a lot of water when irrigated, and generous watering is exactly what turbo-charges the invasive root spread. Established screens actually manage on roughly 20–40 litres per tree weekly in summer and 10–15 litres every 10–14 days in winter — keep it deliberately lean. Young plants establishing in year one want 15–25 litres two to three times weekly in the hot months.
Use drip irrigation placed on the garden side of the trees, away from walls and pipework, so roots are drawn inward rather than toward services. Avoid hose flooding, which sends water — and roots — far beyond the bed and wastes DEWA water. Underwatering conocarpus is safer than overwatering it: lean irrigation keeps a screen dense while slowing the root aggression that causes expensive damage. This restraint is one of the few genuine ways to reduce its downside.
Best Mulch & Depth
A 50–70mm layer of coconut coir organic mulch along a conocarpus screen cuts evaporation from the root zone by up to 70% in UAE conditions, so you can hold irrigation at those deliberately low volumes without the hedge browning. Keep the mulch 50–100mm clear of each trunk to avoid collar rot.
There is a strategic reason to mulch too: by concentrating moisture in a defined strip on the garden side, you encourage roots to feed there rather than prospecting toward pipes and walls. Coconut coir is pH-neutral (5.8–6.8), lasts 18–24 months, and adds organic matter to sterile sand as it breaks down. Soil & Fertiliser
Conocarpus grows in almost anything, including the UAE's sandy alkaline soils at pH 7.5–8.5 and sites irrigated with saline water where other species fail. No soil correction is needed, and that adaptability is part of why it spread so widely. A little compost at planting aids establishment, and decomposing mulch supplies the ongoing organic matter a screen requires.
Fertilise sparingly, if at all. A single balanced NPK application in October is enough for an existing hedge; more feed simply means more pruning, more water demand and more root extension — all things you want to limit. Chlorosis is rare on conocarpus given its tolerance of alkaline conditions. If a screen looks pale and thin, check for waterlogging or severe root disturbance before reaching for fertiliser. The goal with an existing conocarpus is restraint, not vigour.
Sun & Position
Full sun to light shade, with full sun giving the densest screen. Salt tolerance is exceptional — coastal spray, brackish irrigation and shamal-blown dust all wash over it — which is why it lined exposed corniches from Sharjah to Abu Dhabi during the boom. Wind resistance is excellent when trimmed as a hedge.
Position, though, is where conocarpus goes wrong most often. Think roots first, canopy second: keep any conocarpus at least 5 metres from boundary walls, footings and paved drives, and 8–10 metres from swimming pools, water lines and sewer runs. If your plot cannot give those clearances, do not plant it — choose a better-behaved species below. Where it is already close to services, install a vertical HDPE root barrier 1–1.2 metres deep between tree and structure, keep the trees coppiced small, and never run drip lines against walls or pipe corridors, because roots follow the water you give them.
Common Problems
Invasive root damage to structures — the defining problem and the reason for the restrictions: cracked boundary walls, lifted interlock, infiltrated sewer and irrigation pipes, and stressed pool shells and foundations. Prevention is distance and barriers; the cure is often removal.
