Duranta (Golden Dewdrop) Care in the UAE

Duranta erecta with blue flowers and golden berries in a mulched UAE garden hedge

Duranta erecta, the golden dewdrop or sky flower, is one of the hardest-working shrubs in Gulf landscaping. It carries sprays of lavender-blue flowers for most of the year, follows them with strings of glossy golden-yellow berries, and clips into a tidy hedge or stands as a loose specimen with equal ease.

It earns its place in villa gardens and commercial planting because it flowers through the heat, tolerates hard shearing, and roots readily in sandy soil. Given a coir-mulched root zone and sensible watering, it is close to trouble-free.

This guide covers watering litres by season, the right coconut coir mulch depth for a shrub of this size, feeding for alkaline sand, and the handful of pests worth watching, plus a brief note on the berries.

Overview

Duranta (Duranta erecta, syn. Duranta repens) is an evergreen shrub in the Verbenaceae family, native to the Caribbean, Mexico and South America. In the UAE it grows as a fast, dense shrub 1–3m tall, often used for informal hedging, screening and topiary balls. Golden-leaved cultivars such as 'Sheena's Gold' are grown for foliage rather than flowers.

It suits the Emirates well: it flowers and fruits through the long warm season, shrugs off pruning, and roots quickly from cuttings, which keeps replacement cheap for large schemes. Its main challenge is a thirst for steadier moisture than truly drought-hardy plants, and a note of caution: the ripe berries and leaves are toxic if eaten, so it is not the first choice for gardens used by small children or pets. Browse our wider UAE plant guides for companions and hedging alternatives.

Water Requirements

Duranta likes more consistent moisture than a desert-rose or bougainvillea, but it still resents waterlogging in sand. Aim to keep the root zone lightly moist, not wet, and let the surface dry between waterings. As guidance for an established in-ground plant:

  • Summer (Jun–Sep): around 25–40 litres per week across two or three sessions.
  • Spring and autumn: roughly 15–25 litres per week.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): 10–15 litres every 7–10 days, skipping rainy weeks.

Drip irrigation along a hedge line is far more efficient than a hose and keeps foliage dry, reducing fungal risk. A coir-mulched bed cuts evaporation by up to 70%, which matters most for a thirsty hedge through a Dubai or Sharjah summer, letting you stretch intervals and trim your DEWA irrigation bill without stressing the plants.

Best Mulch & Depth

Duranta is a medium shrub, so use the mid-residential range: 50–60mm of coconut coir mulch over the root zone, extended out to the drip line and, for hedges, run as a continuous strip along the row. Keep the mulch 50–70mm clear of the main stems so the collar stays dry.

A 50–60mm layer moderates soil temperature over the shallow feeding roots, suppresses weeds along the hedge base where hand-weeding is slow, and holds moisture between waterings, which is exactly what this steady-drinking shrub wants. Coir's slightly acidic pH of 5.8–6.8 gently counters alkaline sand as it breaks down, feeding soil biology and building humus. Size an order with the mulch calculator and follow the installation guide to lay a hedge strip evenly.

Soil & Fertiliser

UAE sand gives the sharp drainage duranta needs, but its pH of 7.5–8.5 sits above ideal. Work compost into the planting hole for water-holding organic matter, and let decomposing coir build humus from the surface down; both support the microorganisms and earthworms that keep sandy beds productive.

Duranta is a hungry flowering shrub. Feed monthly from October to April with a balanced NPK such as a 15-15-15, switching to a higher-potassium feed if you want maximum flower and berry over foliage. Ease off in peak summer when growth slows. Yellowing between green veins signals iron chlorosis, common in alkaline soil; correct it with chelated iron. Foliage cultivars like 'Sheena's Gold' keep their brightest colour with steady, moderate feeding.

Sun & Position

Duranta flowers best in full sun, at least six hours, though it tolerates light afternoon shade in the harshest inland heat of Al Ain. In deep shade it grows leggy and flowers thinly. It makes an excellent screening hedge on villa boundaries, covered in our villa landscaping notes.

Salt tolerance is moderate, so in front-line coastal plots give it some shelter and flush the root zone occasionally to move salts down. It handles shamal winds once established, and responds to hard shearing with dense regrowth, making it forgiving to shape. Site hedges where the low branches, berries and any fallen fruit are away from spaces used by young children.

Common Problems

Whitefly is duranta's signature pest in the Gulf: clouds of tiny white insects rise when you brush the hedge, and their honeydew brings sooty mould. Knock populations back with strong water jets, yellow sticky traps and horticultural soap or neem. Mealybugs and aphids gather on soft new growth and flower spikes. Spider mites flare in hot, dusty conditions, stippling leaves. Sooty mould is a symptom, not a disease; clear the sap-suckers and it fades. Leaf-edge scorch usually points to saline irrigation or under-watering rather than pest damage, so check your water before reaching for a spray.

Seasonal Care Calendar

SeasonDuranta care
Oct–NovPrime planting window. Resume monthly feeding, shape hedges, refresh mulch to 50–60mm. Flowering and berry set build as nights cool.
Dec–FebStrong flowering and fruiting. Water every 7–10 days, skip after rain. Light trims keep hedges dense without removing all flower.
Mar–MayVigorous growth. Deep-water twice weekly, feed monthly, clip hedges to shape before the heat. Watch for early whitefly.
Jun–SepGrowth slows in extreme heat. Two to three deep waterings weekly, hold feeding, avoid hard pruning. Monitor whitefly and spider mites.

Duranta pairs well with other sun-loving Gulf flowering shrubs. Combine it with ixora for hot reds at a lower height, plumbago for a matching soft blue on similar water, and hamelia where you want fiery orange tubular flowers behind it. For a taller flowering backdrop, add tecoma. All share duranta's love of full sun and a coir-mulched, free-draining root zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I water duranta in the UAE summer?

For an established plant, two to three deep waterings a week through June to September, totalling roughly 25–40 litres, keeps a duranta hedge flowering without waterlogging the sand. Let the surface dry between sessions. Drip irrigation along the hedge line is far more efficient than a hose and keeps the foliage dry, which reduces fungal problems. A 50–60mm coconut coir mulch layer slows evaporation by up to 70%, so you can stretch the interval comfortably even in peak heat.

Are duranta berries poisonous?

Yes. The ripe golden berries and the leaves of Duranta erecta contain compounds that are toxic if eaten, and cases of poisoning in children and pets are documented. The plant is still widely and safely grown as a hedge, but site it away from areas used by small children or dogs, and clear fallen fruit from lawns and paths. If you need a berry-free screen for a family garden, a foliage cultivar or an alternative such as ixora is a safer choice.

How much mulch should I put around a duranta hedge?

Lay 50–60mm of coconut coir mulch as a continuous strip along the hedge line, out to the drip edge, and keep it 50–70mm clear of the main stems. This mid-range depth is right for a medium shrub: it cuts evaporation by up to 70%, suppresses weeds along the base where hand-weeding is slow, and holds steady moisture, which duranta prefers. Use the mulch calculator to work out volume for the length and width of your hedge run.

Why does my duranta have clouds of white insects?

Those are whitefly, duranta's most common Gulf pest. They cluster under the leaves and rise in a cloud when the hedge is disturbed, feeding on sap and coating foliage in sticky honeydew that turns to black sooty mould. Manage them with strong water jets, yellow sticky traps and repeat sprays of horticultural soap or neem oil, targeting the leaf undersides. Keeping plants healthy and unstressed, with steady watering and a mulched root zone, makes them far less prone to heavy infestations.

Can duranta be grown as a hedge in Dubai?

Yes, it is one of the most popular flowering hedge plants in Dubai and across the Emirates. It responds to hard shearing with dense regrowth, flowers through most of the year, and screens quickly because it grows fast. Space plants 45–60cm apart along a drip line, mulch the strip with coir, and trim lightly through the flowering season to keep it dense without cutting off all the flower. For boundary screening it is hard to beat on cost and reliability.

Does duranta flower all year in the UAE?

Close to it. Duranta flowers heavily from autumn through spring and keeps producing through summer, only slowing in the most extreme heat. The lavender-blue sprays are followed by golden berries, so a mature plant often shows flowers and fruit together. Steady moisture, full sun and monthly feeding in the cooler months keep the display going. In deep shade or under drought stress, flowering thins out and growth turns leggy.

Why are my duranta leaves turning yellow?

The most common cause in the UAE is iron chlorosis: new leaves yellow between green veins because alkaline sandy soil locks up iron. Treat it with chelated iron and mulch with coir, whose mild acidity helps over time. Uniform yellowing of older leaves can mean general underfeeding or waterlogging, while scorched yellow-brown leaf edges usually point to saline irrigation water. Check watering and salinity before assuming a nutrient problem.

How hard can I prune duranta?

Very hard. Duranta tolerates severe cutting back and reshoots densely, which is why it takes so well to hedging and topiary. Do the heaviest structural pruning in early autumn or spring, outside the peak summer heat, so regrowth matures in good conditions. Through the flowering season, stick to light trims, since flowers and berries form on newer wood and constant shearing removes coming colour. Always wear gloves, as some forms carry small thorns.

Is duranta salt tolerant for coastal gardens?

It has moderate salt tolerance, enough for most inland and second-line coastal gardens but not for exposed beachfront plots with constant salt spray and highly saline water. In coastal communities, give it some shelter, use the best-quality irrigation water you can, and flush the root zone with an occasional deep watering to push accumulated salts below the roots. A coir mulch layer helps by reducing evaporation, which slows the rate at which salts concentrate at the surface.

Can I grow duranta in a pot?

Yes. Duranta grows well in large containers on terraces and balconies, either clipped into a ball or left to arch. Use a free-draining mix, a pot with good drainage holes, and water when the top few centimetres dry out, more often in summer as pots heat up fast in the Gulf. Feed monthly through the cooler months. A 30–40mm coir mulch topping keeps the compost from baking and cuts how often you need to water.

What is the difference between green duranta and Sheena's Gold?

The common green-leaved Duranta erecta is grown for its blue flowers and golden berries, while 'Sheena's Gold' is a compact cultivar grown mainly for its bright chartreuse-gold foliage and flowers only sparingly. Sheena's Gold makes a vivid low hedge or contrast planting and, because it fruits little, carries less of the berry-toxicity concern. Both enjoy the same full sun, free-draining sandy soil and coir-mulched root zone, and both take clipping well.

How far apart should I plant duranta for a hedge?

For a solid screen, space plants about 45–60cm apart along the row; closer for a fast, dense low hedge, wider for a taller informal screen where you are happy to wait. Set them along a single drip line, mulch the whole strip with 50–60mm of coir, and water consistently for the first two to three months while roots establish. Once knitted together, the hedge needs only light regular trimming to stay full.
