In summer, open ground can lose the equivalent of 8–12mm of water a day to evaporation and plant transpiration combined — which is why bare-soil beds need irrigating daily, sometimes twice, just to stand still. A large share of that water never reaches a root: it evaporates from the hot soil surface within hours of the drip cycle ending.

Mulch attacks exactly that loss. The formula, step by step

The calculation is deliberately transparent so you can audit every step:

  • Daily saving (litres) = irrigated area (m²) × application rate (L/m²/day) × reduction factor (50–70%)
  • Annual saving (litres) = daily saving × 365
  • Annual saving (AED) = annual litres × your tariff (AED per litre)

Example: 40 m² of beds receiving 7 L/m²/day, with mulch cutting losses by 70%: 40 × 7 × 0.70 = 196 litres/day, or about 71,500 litres a year. At AED 0.01/litre that is roughly AED 715 a year — against a one-off mulch cost of about AED 1,500 for 3 m³ of bulk coir that lasts 18–24 months.

The reduction factor is the honest variable. Field practice and evapotranspiration science support mulch cutting soil-surface evaporation by well over half, and Green Zen coir at proper depth achieves up to 70% versus bare soil; but thin layers, exposed edges and spray irrigation (which wets the mulch surface) push results toward the lower bound. That is why the field is adjustable from 50% to 70% — model the conservative case before you spend.

Finding your real inputs

Area: count only irrigated, mulchable bed area — not lawn, which is not mulched, and not hardscape. Use the garden area calculator to measure it properly.

Application rate: the honest way is from your controller. Multiply emitter flow (typically 2–8 L/hour per dripper) by the number of emitters and daily run minutes, then divide by bed area. Most UAE drip-irrigated beds land between 6 and 8 L/m²/day in summer and a third of that in winter; the default of 7 reflects a summer schedule. If you irrigate by hose, time how long it takes to fill a 10L bucket and scale accordingly.

Tariff: take a recent bill and divide the water charge (including fuel surcharge) by litres consumed for a blended rate. DEWA residential slabs, Abu Dhabi tariffs for nationals versus expatriates, and Sharjah's SEWA rates all differ substantially, and tanker or TSE water changes the economics again — no single default is honest, so enter your own.

Worked examples

Villa garden, 40 m² of beds. Summer rate 7 L/m²/day, 70% reduction: 196 L/day saved, ~71,500 L/year, about AED 715/year at AED 0.01/L. Mulch needed: 2.4 m³ at 60mm ≈ AED 1,500 in bulk. Payback in roughly two summers of a layer that lasts 18–24 months — and that is before counting healthier plants and less weeding, covered on the organic mulch page.

Commercial frontage, 400 m². Same rates: 1,960 L/day, ~715,000 L/year, around AED 7,150/year at the default tariff — more on commercial water rates. Conservative check, same villa. Drop to 6 L/m²/day and a 50% factor: 120 L/day, ~43,800 L/year, AED 438/year. Even the pessimistic case pays for the mulch within its lifespan — the arithmetic survives its own worst assumptions.

Beyond the water bill

The litres are only part of the case. Mulched beds hold moisture longer, so irrigation cycles can be shortened or skipped — many customers cut summer run times by a third after mulching, which is where the modelled saving actually gets banked. Cooler root zones (mulch buffers soil temperature under 45°C+ sun) reduce summer plant losses, and fewer dead shrubs is a saving no water bill shows. Frequently Asked Questions

How much water does a UAE garden use in summer?

Drip-irrigated planting beds typically receive 6–8 litres per square metre per day in the June–September peak, with lawns needing considerably more. A modest 40 m² of beds therefore consumes around 8,000–10,000 litres a month in summer. Evaporation claims a large share of it, which is exactly the loss mulch targets.

Is a 70% reduction in water loss realistic?

As a reduction in soil-surface evaporation under a proper 50–70mm coir layer, yes — that is the top of the documented range and what Green Zen coir achieves versus bare soil. Your banked saving depends on actually shortening irrigation cycles to match. Model 50% if you want a conservative business case; the calculator lets you set either.

What water tariff should I enter?

Your own blended rate: divide the water portion of a recent bill, including fuel surcharge, by litres used. DEWA residential slab rates, Abu Dhabi's differing tariffs, SEWA in Sharjah and tanker water all price differently, which is why the field defaults to a deliberately conservative AED 0.01 per litre rather than pretending one rate fits the UAE.

Why doesn't the calculator use an official DEWA rate?

Because there is no single rate. Utilities bill in slabs that rise with consumption, tariffs differ by emirate and customer category, and surcharges move. Any hard-coded figure would be wrong for most users, so we default low at AED 0.01/litre and let you enter the number from your own bill — honesty over precision theatre.

Does mulch save water in winter too?

Yes, but less, because winter irrigation rates drop to roughly a third of summer levels and evaporation is gentler. The calculator's annual figure assumes your entered rate year-round, so for a refined estimate run summer and winter rates separately for 180 days each and sum them. The summer half dominates the savings.

How does mulch actually reduce evaporation?

Three mechanisms: it shades the soil so the surface stays far cooler; it breaks the capillary pathway that wicks moisture from the root zone up to the drying surface; and it blocks wind from sweeping saturated air off the soil. Fibrous coconut coir performs all three well at 50–70mm depth.

Should mulch go over or under drip lines?

Drip lines go on the soil, mulch goes over them. Buried under coir, emitters lose almost nothing to evaporation, the lines are protected from UV degradation, and water enters soil that stays moist rather than flash-drying. It is the single most water-efficient irrigation arrangement available for UAE beds.

How quickly does mulch pay for itself in water savings?

Can I reduce my irrigation timer after mulching?

You should — that is how the theoretical saving becomes a real one. After mulching, cut run times by 20–30% and watch the beds for a fortnight; soil under coir stays moist far longer, and most gardens settle at significantly shorter summer cycles. Adjust seasonally and check emitters when you top up the mulch.

Does mulch help with saline irrigation water?

Indirectly, yes. Less evaporation means less salt concentrating at the soil surface, since salts are left behind when water evaporates. Combined with periodic deep leaching irrigations, a coir layer measurably slows the surface salinity build-up that damages sensitive plants — a chronic issue with UAE bore and recycled water.

Is this calculator valid for lawns?

No — mulch is for beds, borders, trees and planters, not turf, so enter only your mulchable bed area. Lawns are the biggest water consumer in most UAE gardens, which is why xeriscaping designs shrink lawn in favour of mulched planting; run the numbers before and after and the case usually makes itself.

How do I measure my actual irrigation rate?

From the controller: emitter flow rate (printed on the dripper, usually 2–8 L/hour) × number of emitters × daily minutes ÷ 60 ÷ bed area. Example: 60 emitters at 4 L/hr running 20 minutes daily on 40 m² is 60 × 4 × 0.33 ÷ 40 = 2 L/m²/day — winter territory. Repeat for your summer schedule.

Do these savings apply with sprinkler or spray irrigation?

Only partially, and it is the wrong pairing: spray wets the mulch surface, where some water evaporates before ever reaching soil. Mulch still helps, but expect the lower half of the 50–70% range. Converting beds to drip under mulch is the configuration that captures the full saving and usually pays for itself quickly.

What about gardens watered by tanker?

The formula works the same; enter your effective tanker cost per litre, which is often higher than utility water once delivery is included. Tanker-supplied gardens in areas without TSE connections frequently see the fastest payback from mulching, because every litre not evaporated is a litre not trucked in.

Does deeper mulch save more water?

Up to a point. The step from bare soil to 30mm captures most of the shading effect, but 50–70mm is where the capillary break and temperature buffering hold up through a full UAE summer, and it is the depth our up-to-70% figure assumes. Beyond 80–100mm returns flatten and you risk waterlogged crowns on sensitive plants.
