Downtown Dubai Mulch vs Pine Bark Specification Study
A proposed organic mulch supply specification for a hospitality landscape in Downtown Dubai: 7,904 m² of planted areas at 70 mm depth, a calculated in-place volume of 553.28 m³. Green Zen Organic Mulch was proposed as an alternative to conventional pine bark.
The Project
A hospitality landscape in Downtown Dubai called for organic brown mulch across 7,904 m² of planted areas at 70 mm depth, with spreading to be carried out by the landscape contractor. The client, consultant and contractor are not identified.
Specification
At 70 mm, 7,904 m² requires 553.28 m³ of mulch in place. Green Zen proposed its UAE-produced, coconut-husk organic mulch for bulk supply and delivery coordination. Installation and spreading were outside the proposed scope.
Mulch vs Pine Bark
The proposal raised two general concerns about pine bark in UAE planting schemes:
Soil pH. Pine bark is generally acidic, commonly cited at around pH 4.0–5.0, which may not suit the alkaline-tolerant ornamentals used in many UAE schemes.
Plant stress. Fresh or poorly composted bark can release tannins and phenolic compounds as it breaks down, a risk most relevant while new planting is establishing.
Green Zen Organic Mulch is produced in the UAE from coconut husk on a twelve-month production cycle. These points describe pine bark in general terms; they were not tested on this site, and Green Zen does not present them as measured results.
